Aw, how I enjoy Fridays...especially Friday nights. It always seems to be a repreave from the week and just a time to enjoy the eve of the weekend!
Earlier this week I had asked Camryn if she would like to come to the Big Village (as she affectionately calls the school I work) and watch the middle school boys basketball team. She was so excited to come to school and get to play on the playground and enjoy running around the campus. Yes, Camryn loves Village...she absolutely cannot wait until September when she is able to go to kindergarten. Well, today the game was cancelled and I knew that Camryn and Wyatt both would be disappointed if we didn't go play, so...
We went and made Village's kindergarten playground our own personal playground. Camryn and Wyatt had lots of fun climbing all over the equipment, sliding on the slides, playing tag and just enjoying the evening. Jason and I both commented on how big the kids are getting and just where did time go?
After our playground adventures we headed to get some dinner...we had a great time enjoying a dinner out and being together.
Now, we are home and enjoying the quietness of the evening...I am thankful for our Friday night fun. Makes for a happy ending for a long week...
Looking forward to the weekend ahead.

smiles...giggles
Tonight was a gift...lately we have had some hard nights in the Mikels household. Camryn's been struggling with things and honestly, it feels like we are battling a lot of things...
But, tonight was different. Oh there were the occasional tears and crankiness; but we saw smiles and heard giggles and it was amazing.
Bath time is always a fun time for Camryn & Wyatt, they spend lots of time either laughing or flooding the bathroom. I happy to say tonight the laughing won.

We are so very thankful that smiles and giggles were heard tonight, oh how we needed to hear those precious sounds.

do something...
I have been visiting an old friend lately...a book entitled Why? by Anne Graham Lotz. This book found its way into my hands almost 3 years ago now, when the question of "Why?" permeated every part of my life.
As I revisit countless words and phrases my heart is drawn over and over again to a very simple, yet profound reality...Jesus Loves Me. I think sometimes I sideline that sentiment along with all the other trivial, standard Bible answers of my youth. Yes, Jesus loves me...but, does He really know me. Because after all to know me is to love me; isn't that how the saying goes?
And if Jesus really knows me than He must know that my heart aches...that my heart is torn in many fragmented pieces...that the last almost 3 years have been by far the toughest in my life? And if He knows all that why doesn't He do something.
Do something...Jason and I went to a Dodger game and were chuckling at the man in front of us who brought his Dodger Blue merchandise and his megaphone and would yell every time a Dodger came to the plate..."(insert name) do something." It was as if he was willing them to act...that because he wanted them to they would. As you know life doesn't work like that...I cannot will a baseball player to hit a home run. If I could...oh if I could.
That seems to be the way it is with God...I figure if you know the score than you know we really need to hit one out of the park. No base hit will do, what we need now is a home run. And yet, we step up to the plate and strike out...God why didn't you do something.
Lately, I am asking myself those same questions...God do you not see us, do you not know...The ironic thing is that I do know that He sees and understands. It is in the believing that, that I struggle.
You see 3 years ago the plans Jason and I had made were shattered, our world came crashing down in one word...leukemia. And now yes almost 3 years later I still wrestle with it all. It is a very odd reality to come back to life so to speak...to have your life halted, paused, isolated and slowly begin to emerge into the light again. Fearfully, you begin to start again...
I always knew that Jason and I would have a struggle as we found a new normal...as we processed the events of the past and wrestled with the realities of the future. But, I never quite grasped the struggle it would be for Camryn. Camryn is struggling now...
She is afraid of being sick...she is afraid to trust...she is scared of the future. She wants to be normal so badly, and yet everything is saying to her you are not. Try explaining to a 4 year old that her chronic sinusitis is normal...that she is okay and taking medicine for 4 weeks is okay. Yeah, that is not the easiest thing in the world. Camryn is desperately trying to find a sturdy place...a place where she can begin to live again.
I won't lie there have been many tears cried over the past couple weeks as I wrestle in myself to figure out what to do...after all I need to do something, right?
So...God directed me to my old friend again to speak to my heart through words that seem to pierce my very core...
Are you interpreting His love by your circumstances instead of interpreting your circumstances by His love?
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and every day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
Look on me and answer, O Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
my enemy will say, "I have overcome him,"
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
for he has been good to me.
~ Psalm 13
Trusting in the Lord's unfailing love and believing that He has and He will do something. Patiently waiting for His voice...His leading and His redemption.
After all He has done something...He sent His Son to die for me, oh He has been good to me.

band - aids...scars...remedies
Have you ever noticed how incredibly proud little kids are of their "boo-boos"? I laugh as if Camryn needs a band - aid here comes Wyatt to get one too; it's all the rage. Really? I smile as they pick out the perfect band - aid, one that they can wear with pride. Have you ever noticed that those band - aids hold a world of healing all by themselves?
I have...
Because as some of you know the last almost 3 years have held lots of "band - aid" moments if you will. Moments when all you want to do is cover the hurt and hope that it heals and that whoever takes the band - aid off does it gently.
But sometimes those hurts leave scars.
Scars are a funny thing...a reminder of some "accident" or event that happened. Camryn wears her central line scar like a badge, when she takes a bath or changes her clothes she will point it out. "Here is my scar", she'll say. And as I gaze at that scar my mind is flooded with a thousand other scars that I carry on my heart. There are a few other scars on Camryn that she can't see, because they are on her lower back, by her hips...marks of the many bone marrow aspirations she had. I see them and remember the first time she was put under...the first of many bone marrow aspirations. Holding her hand as she gently slipped away from me and I was taken out of the room and anxiously awaited outside so I would be there when she woke up. Yes, those are scars that somehow I cannot erase...but, the bigger question is do I want to?
You see in those scars I am driven to find the remedy. The healing saave on the wounds of my heart...the One who will hold my heart until the hurt goes away. I won't lie after almost 3 years the hurt comes in ways I least expect it and some times I feel as if it will drown me. So, I cry out to the One who is the remedy...
I shared this song on our other website, but the words are so incredibly powerful that I want to share it here as well...
Remedy...
Here we are
Here we are
The broken and used
Mistreated, abused
Here we are
Here You are
Here You are
The beautiful one
Who came like a Son
Here You are
So we lift up our voices
We open our hands
To cling to the love
That we can’t comprehend
Oh, lift up your voices
And lift up your heads
To sing of the love
That has freed us from sin
He is the one
Who has saved us
He is the one
Who embraced us
He is the one who has come
And is coming again
He’s the remedy
Here we are
Here we are
Bandaged and bruised
Awaiting a cure
Here we are
Here You are
Here You are
Our beautiful King
Bringing relief
Here You are with us
So we lift up our voices
And open our hands
Let go of the things
That have kept us from Him
He is the one
Who has saved us
He is the one
Who forgave us
He is the one who has come
And is coming again
He’s the remedy
Oh, I can’t comprehend
I can’t take it all in
Never understand
Such perfect love come
For the broken and beat
For the wounded and weak
Oh, come fall at His feet
He’s the remedy
He’s the remedy
So sing, sing
You are the one
Who has saved us
You are the one
Who forgave us
You are the one who has come
And is coming again
To make it alright
Oh, to make it alright
You’re the remedy
Oh, in us
You’re the remedy
Let us be the remedy
Let us bring the remedy
~ David Crowder Band
I do not pretend to understand what the Lord is doing with my life nor the lives of those around me. There are moments when I desparately long to understand, to catch a glimpse of the reasons...and yet, I am left longing. The one thing I do know and cling to each day is that the Lord will make it right...He will wipe every tear from my eyes...He will redeem...He will. And until that day I will hold ever so tightly to my remedy...My Savior.

This is A.merican Idol...
As some of you might know, it's A.merican Idol season...yep, the show is back. I won't lie Jason and I both like to watch the show and see the ones who have it and those that don't. Last year Camryn got really into the final 12, she loved watching them sing...well, this year she is quite into it again.
Last night we let her stay up a bit later so that she could watch and she just so enjoys it. It is actually quite funny when she judges the singers by saying, "Mommy, yes or no?"...hope she is not our little Simon.
Well, tonight while Camryn & Wyatt were taking a bath they decided to play American Idol. Evidently this is some kind of game that Camryn has created...here's the jist...
Each of us takes a turn singing a song and then we get to be the judges saying yes or no and if you get yes' then you are going to Hollywood if not you get to sing again. Let me just say we spent quite a few minutes playing, singing and laughing. Wyatt singing "Real Gone" a tribute to Cars and S.heryl Crow...Camryn singing a few songs that she wrote herself...and me just laughing and smiling at the two of them livin' the dream.
So in the words of R.yan Seacrest...This is A.merican Idol.

Our Story...
Our story began about 17 years ago when Jason moved to California with his family from Minnesota. We met at church as his dad was the new pastor; I was 16 and he was 14. Looking back now it just seems so unreal that Jason Mikels and I got married...
We started dating in June of 1999...it was wonderful. I won't lie, we had our ups and downs throughout our dating life; but honestly we knew that we were going to get married on day. Jason and I enjoyed being friends for so long before we even dated so to think that we were dating now made us promise not to lose our friendship. I know that's the kind of promise made on t.v. shows, but honestly, we meant it.
After 2 years of dating on July 16, 2001 after a day at the beach, dinner at Duke's in Malibu and back to the beach to watch the sunset Jason asked me to marry him. He gave me a bracelet that was engraved, "Will you marry me?"...then he got on one knee and opened the red box. Oh, my goodness my heart just exploded with joy!
March 15, 2002 was the happiest day of my life up until then...Jason and I were going to be married. As I remember the day was beautiful...everything I had hoped and dreamed.
The second happiest day came on April 12, 2004 when our baby girl Camryn Lee came into our lives. Camryn was the sweetest baby girl ever. Throughout the 9 months of pregnancy Camryn was an angel...we did not find out what we were having, in fact everyone predicted it was a boy, so we were surprised when the doctor said, "It's a girl." A girl...
During the summer of 2005 we thought we'd try again to add to our family...we got pregnant and were so happy. The plan was coming together perfectly, well that is to us. In August we found out that we had lost our baby to miscarriage. My heart broke as I realized I would never get to hold my baby this side of heaven...yet, I know that God's love far surpasses our understanding.
We continued to try for another little one waiting to see what the future held. In February of 2006 we found out that we were expecting our next bundle of joy. I was extremely nervous, not wanting to say anything to anyone after having a miscarriage. We were thrilled and so incredibly happy...
Four days later...
Our world came crashing down. Camryn had started getting sick over the weekend...she was bruising like crazy. Honestly, to this day I can still vividly see her bruised legs and hips...she was also showing signs of a bleeding problem as her gums started bleeding. After a doctor appointment, ER visit, transfer to Cedars - Sinai, our beautiful baby girl Camryn Lee was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. Leukemia keep swirling in my head...leukemia = cancer. My baby girl has cancer. Immediately we began treatment and began the long journey...
All was going really well until June when Camryn relapsed...at that point it was determined that Camryn would need a bone marrow transplant (BMT) as her body was not responding to the chemotherapy. Thus, the search for a donor began. Jason and I were immediately tested...no match. Camryn's blood typing was entered into the database and the search began...
One day as I was waiting for Camryn to come out of the procedure room after one of her numerous bone marrow aspirations her doctor looked at me and said, "The baby, we need to test the baby." The rollercoaster began...we started the process of figuring out how to make that happen. Camryn's window was closing and we really did not know what we could do...we prayed that God would somehow make all the details come together...
After numerous phone calls...numerous prayers...I got a call from my OBGYN's office saying if you are at the hospital by 5:00 today the doctor will do the amnioscientis for free. What? For free?
We waited 6 days after the ammnio and on August 23, 2006 we got the news of a lifetime..."the baby is a perfect match 10 out of 10."
This is the stuff of God...there is no way around it. God provided a provision for Camryn long before we even knew that she needed it and yet...He did.
Now, to get Camryn healthy...she was relapsing so incredibly fast...we had a donor, but that would be a mute point if we could not get her well enough for transplant. Camryn's doctors came into her room one day and said the dreaded words, "this is our last hope." We decided with their guidance to do whatever we could; which meant Camryn would be given arsenic trioxide to battle her APL. For 25 days she had treatment...
On September 14, 2006...a day forever etched in my memory Wyatt Jason came into the world. My doctor was concerned that he would be little as according to due dates he was 2 weeks early...but he was 8 pounds 9 ounces. I will never forget what my doctor said, "This baby isn't early, he is right on time." From that moment on we've cherished the verse "for such a time as this"...Wyatt came into our world at the most momentous time.
We had about a month as a family of four before Camryn went in for transplant...those were some great days and happy days, but also days full of heartache. We did not know if our little girl would ever come home again...it's an interesting thing living knowing that once you say good-bye that it might be the last. Makes you see the world quite differently, when you realize that your child is not your own...that their life is not yours to choose...
October 20, 2006...Camryn's second birthday, her transplant day...God brought healing...God did an amazing work in her body and our lives to bring us to where we are today.
We are changed people...we are parents of a cancer survivor and donor...our lives are forever stamped with the realities of heartache...
Now, two years since transplant Camryn is doing wonderfully...she is beating the odds in every way. Wyatt is two and is absolutely a joy to our hearts. We are learning to live in a new normal...
A normal so incredibly different than many around us...We don't see things as they do...We don't feel things as they do...We are changed...
For the better....
